AI Use Policy

AI tools help our small team review submissions from across the country. Here is how we use them, and where we draw the line.

How we use AI

  • To check submitted stories for grammar, clarity, style, and missing information.
  • To flag possible privacy problems, such as a student's full name, and claims that need a source.
  • To help draft explainers and guides from public, official sources, which we cite and link.
  • To suggest headlines, summaries, and newsletter blurbs.

What AI does not do

  • AI does not decide what we publish. A human editor approves every story.
  • We do not publish AI-generated quotes or attribute statements to real people that they did not make.
  • We do not use AI-generated images to depict real people, schools, or events.

Labels

Stories drafted with significant AI assistance carry the label "AI-assisted, editor reviewed" and a note explaining how the story was made. Those stories are published under a staff byline, such as Education Press Staff, and list their sources.

Your submissions

When you submit a story, it may be processed by AI tools as part of our review. We do not sell your submissions or use them to train public AI models.
